By Express press service

KOCHI: Entering the field of rail wheel machining and reprofiling, HMT Machine Tools Ltd in Kalamassery has developed a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) surface wheel lathe for the simultaneous reprofiling of both wheels of the axle-wheel assembly with high precision and surface finish. The entry of HMT will double the production capacity of Railways.

Industries Minister P Rajeeve will launch the HMT Reprofiled Surface Wheel on Sunday at 10.30am. HMT Director General S Balamurugesan will preside over the ceremony. When rail wheel profiles reach critical wear, due to extreme loads, they must be reprofiled or replaced. The purpose of wheel reprofiling is to process worn wheels to the geometric size of the standard contour.

Machine features include automatic loading and unloading of axle wheel assemblies, laser centering and condition monitoring, improved part measurement, intelligent machining cycles and on-line diagnostics. remote with a simplified operator interface.

Final testing of the machine was carried out by RITES, an inspection agency delegated by the railways. The machine was developed for railways to provide a high surface finish. To meet the quality standard, 95% of the machine elements were manufactured and assembled in-house.

Testing and inspection by the rail team was recently completed at HMT Kalamassery. The machine will soon be installed at Kharagpur Railway Workshop.
